Our comment on
A truly great vintage to which I have a special connection. A small harvest because of poor flowering conditions; one of the hottest summers in memory brought concentrated wines with less power than the ‘47s and less tannins than the ’45, but they were more elegant than both. I am fortunate enough to have been born in this great vintage and have often been offered wines at dinners by generous hosts knowing this. It is a very consistent vintage and the wines are mostly still a great joy to drink. The wine of the vintage is for me Mouton, however all premier cru's are great. Cheval Blanc, Pétrus, La Mission and Calon Ségur are wonderful as is Figeac which made one of its best wines ever in 1949. To conclude: A vintage which still has a lot to offer.
